Date28 November 1969Reference NumberPhoto gca-18712DescriptionShoppers in Tauranga's Devonport Road this morning were more than a little puzzled when the 32ft, six-ton "helter-skelter" pictured was un-loaded from a trailer on to a vacant section at the corner of Devonport Road and Elizabeth Street. The device, believed to be the only one in NZ, is to be operated during the next few months on the section by a vestryman of the St John's Anglican Church, Ōtūmoetai, who has it on lease. The vestryman will also run miniature train, which he has purchased, on the site. A spokesman for St John's Vestry, Mr G. L. Ingham stressed this morning that the venture is being undertaken independent of the church, although net proceeds will go toward its building fund. The train should be operating in about a week and the helter-skelter in a fortnight.
