Date3 December 1969Reference NumberPhoto gca-18755DescriptionWorkmen are racing against time to complete the $138,000 extension (pictured left) to the Tauranga Racecourse grandstand sufficiently to enable use to be made of the new facilities at the Bay of Plenty Racing Club's meeting on December 30. The extensions are scheduled for completion by March, the club secretary, Mr Ian McEwen, said today. The official opening is set down for March 21. There are four floors in the extension, with a total area of 30,000 square feet. Included is grandstand, members' dining room and lounge, totalisator facilities and official rooms and boxes for judges, radio commentators and the Press. Commissioning the new accommodation will mean that the public will be able to use the original members' stand and its facilities for the first time. Other work now under way at the racecourse will bring the total value of improvements there to $165,000.
