This panel is based on the traditional Poutama element which symbolises education, aspiration and religion. Pou means a pillar and tama a son. This implies a chief or chiefly behaviour. This panel is dedicated to the memory of Mrs Miria Karauria, a past president of the Māori Women's Welfare League. She saw education as the key to a better standard of living for Māori people.
Poutama; hononga whakapapa.
Ka whai tēnei tukutuku i te ara Poutama, hei tohu ako, tūmanako, whakapono hoki. He poutū te pou, he tamaiti te tama. He tohu tēnei i te rangatira, i te whanonga rangatira rānei. He whakamaumahara tēnei tukutuku ki a Miria Karauria, he perēhitini o mua o Te Rōpū Wāhine Toko i te Ora. Ki tāna, he pūnga matua te akoako kia hiki i te nōhanga o te iwi Māori whānui.
