The Aramoana or sea pattern is symbolic of Tangaroa (Atua of the seas and oceans) and the prolific sea life found within his realm. Tauranga Moana, is well known to many who visit these shores, for its variety and abundance of Kaimoana (shellfish and fish species).

He tohu te Aramoana, te ara wai rānei i a Tangaroa (atua o te moana) me te koiora o tōna moana. Rongonui ana a Tauranga Moana ki āna manuhiri i tae mai ki tēnei ākau, i te huhua me te ranea o te kaimoana (mātaitai me ika).
