This pattern represents and acknowledges the bravery of those who died on both sides, during the battles of Pukehinahina (Gate Pā) and Te Ranga. These events occurred on 29 April and 21 June 1864, when local Māori fought with their allies, to defend their whenua (homelands) against the British invasion.
