This panel celebrates the importance of women and childbirth. It also depicts courage and commitment. In this instance, the Waharua represents the navel or umbilical cord, which is also known as Whenua. According to Māori tradition, the umbilical cord should be returned to the whenua (land), following the birth of a child.
