This panel relates to the exploits of Tāwhaki, a demi-god who possessed supernatural powers. He is believed by some tribes to have ascended to the tenth realm for the gifts of knowledge:
Te Kete Tuauri: love, peace, and goodness
Te Kete Tuatea: knowledge of traditions, history, whakapapa, waiata, karakia
Te Kete Aronui: knowledge of arts and crafts, war, agriculture, carvings
The Poutama represents the climb of Tāwhaki. The stars are the Southern Cross, representing the heavens and the whenua pattern pertains to the land.
Ngā Kete o te Mātauranga; ngā kete wānanga e toru.
Ko te tukutuku tēnei ā te pikinga a Tāwhaki, he tipua tūmatarau nui. E ai ki ētahi iwi, i piki ia ki te rangi tuangāhuru ki te tiki i ngā kete o te wānanga:
Te Kete Tuauri; aroha, rongomau me te hua pai
Te Kete Tuatea; ngā tikanga, hītori, whakapapa, waiata, karakia
Te Kete Aronui: ngā toi, pakanga, ahuwhenua, whakairo.
Ko te Poutama te pikinga a Tāwhaki. Ko Mahutonga tērā whetū, hei tohu i te rangi, he whenua anō tā te tohu whenua.
