Porourangi is a pattern favoured by the Ngāti Porou weavers on the East Coast. It is used here to tell the story of Ranginui and Papatūānuku. The Poutama element is a prominent feature of this design, which pertains to whakapapa and represents the inter-marriage between tribes, or Māori and Pākehā. The pattern reflects marriage, with children embraced within the Poutama design.
