Education: Wellington East Girls' College. She graduated from Victoria University College with an MA (Hons) in history in 1937 and completed a DipEd also at Victoria.
Teaching career: She taught at Wellington College from 1942-1944 and also at Whangārei before becoming principal of Tauranga Girls’ College in 1959, a position she held for 22 years. She became a member of the University of Waikato Council in 1979 and was Chancellor of the university from 1988 to 1991.
Honours: In 1993 she received an honorary doctorate from the University of Waikato. She was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to education and the community in the 1980 New Year Honours. In the 2000 New Year Honours she was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to local government and the community. She was subsequently promoted to Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2005 New Year Honours, and reclassified as a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2009. Joy died in Tauranga on 14 September 2012.
Organisations: Joy was involved with, often at a high level, New Zealand Historic Places Trust, National Council of Women, Tauranga Women’s Refuge, Soroptimist Society, Tauranga Historical Society, The Elms Foundation, Bay of Plenty Rose and Heritage Rose Societies, and others..
Personal: She was a keen amateur artist and rose grower, she learned Māori and Polish (being of Polish descent), and she travelled extensively.
Joy married Ronald Wilfred Drayton (1915-1984) in 1941. They had no children.
