Te Tohu Whakamaharatanga mō Te Tohu Whakatū Wāhine 1993 – 2023 (Event)
SummaryAt He Puna Manawa from 12 September - December 2023.
To mark the 30th anniversary of the gifting of these tukutuku to the library, He Tohu Whakamaharatanga mō Te Tohu Whakatū Wāhine, we proudly present again the collection crafted by members of the Matua branch of the Māori Women's Welfare League (Te Rōpū Wāhine Māori Toko i te Ora) in Tauranga. The idea for this collection was born out of a conversation between library staff and the hau kāinga of Paparoa marae, Te Puna, during their visit there.
The library staff admired the tukutuku panels that had been added to their wharenui (Te Werahiko) and wharekai (Te Rina) at the time. Raewyn Tipene-Clarke exchanged thoughts with them about using similar mahi toi to decorate the library's interior and by doing so, create a space that reflects our Māori heritage here in the Moana.
The project was supported through funding received by the Community Arts Council, Trustee Bank Bay of Plenty and the Centennial Suffrage Year Trust 1993. With the collaboration of these members and with support of funding by community organisations, this collection was finished in time for the 1993 Centennial Suffrage Year Trust celebrations.
By showcasing these tukutuku panels, we not only celebrate Māori culture and heritage but also provide an opportunity for the wider community to learn more about Māori art, traditions, and storytelling.
Each tukutuku panel invites viewers to appreciate the beauty and complexity of Māori art, as well its interpretations through the talented members of the Matua Māori Women’s Welfare League.
