Hodgkins, Geoffrey Michael William (Michael), 1902-1965 (Person)
SummaryMichael arrived in Tauranga after 1937. Known for his eccentric behavior, rugged appearance, and profound love of nature, he was both a fascinating and enigmatic figure. His sketches and extensive knowledge of plant and animal life made him a local character, both loved and teased by school children, who nicknamed him "Spring-heel Jack", a term he hated. Living in a small hut by the Ōtūmoetai salt marsh, he became a colorful part of the community. Hodgkins died in his hut around 27 October 1965.SourcesDictionary of New Zealand BiographyMichael Hodgkins, a gentleman and a scholar (Fiona Kean)Tauranga City Libraries, Ams 285Wordpress article by Debbie McCauley
