Politics:

Elected member of the Bay of Plenty Harbour Board in 1962. Elected Mayor of Tauranga from 1968-1971 and of both Tauranga and Mount Maunganui from 1971-1977.

Awards and honours:

• 1982: Granted freedom of the city.
• 1991: Made Commander of the Order of the British Empire, for services to transport industry, local government and community.
• 1996: Inducted into the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame.
• 1997: Appointed a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to business and the community.
