Battles at Pukehinahina (Gate Pā) and Te Ranga Centennial, 1964 (Event)

SummaryIn 1964, Tauranga marked the 100th anniversaries of the Battles of Pukehinahina (Gate Pā) (29 April 1864) and Te Ranga (21 June 1864). As part of the centennial, the Tauranga Historical Society unveiled a memorial at Gate Pā reserve, officiated by Chief Justice Sir Harold Barrowclough and dedicated by Reverend Brown Turei. Aa Historic Places Trust marker was erected at Te Ranga to commemorate the site of the 1864 battle.

Surrounding events were organised mainly by the Tauranga Historical Society, including C. Kingsley Smith’s play The Oval Table, the unveiling of a new monument at the Gate Pā reserve, a reception at St George’s Church Hall and a commemorative ball. The following day featured sports events (including football matches between Pākehā and Māori), marching displays, bands, and a Māori cultural performance at Memorial Park.
