SummaryJohn Butler, born in Sydenham, London, emigrated to Australia before enlisting in the Waikato Militia in Victoria. He arrived in Auckland in 1863 and participated in military engagements in the Auckland district and Tauranga during the New Zealand Wars. After the war, Butler settled in Tauranga, working as a carpenter and joiner. He built a house on the corner of 9th Avenue and Edgecumbe Road in 1869.
