SummaryThe Old House at 65 Ninth Avenue, Tauranga, was built in 1869 by John Butler, a soldier and skilled joiner from the 1st Waikato Regiment. Originally located on Lot 360 as part of the military land allocations. Later owned by Alf Baikie in 1911.
The earliest street directory for Tauranga, which was published in the Bay of Plenty Times in 1880, lists John Butler as living on the north side of Ninth Avenue between Cameron Road and Edgcumbe Road. His occupation is given as carpenter. The Burgess Rolls for 1886 show that he then owned the adjoining lots - 359, 354, and 355. The Rates Book for 1901 shows that he was still paying rates on the same land. The land then appears under the name of Charlotte Butler until 1906. In the 1907 Rates Book, it was owned by C. E. Ridley and his wife Mary. Stephen Earl bought it from them, but sold it very quickly to James Harray, who in 1910 was shown in the Valuation Roll as the owner of lots 354, 355, 359, and 360. In the 1911-1912 Rates Book, Jane(t) Baikie, wife of Peter Baikie, and Alf's mother, is the owner.
The house has been moved on the site to face Ninth Avenue and a small addition made, but the original structure is unchanged.
