Saleyards at Topcroft on Cameron Road, 1886-c.1906 (Place)
SummaryThe Topcroft Sale Yards occupied 12 acres of land fronting Cameron Road within the Topcroft Estate. Originally designated as Lot 1 of "Topcroft," the block was bounded by Cameron Road, Edgecumbe Road, Eleventh Avenue, and Harvey Street (now Twelfth Avenue). Tauranga's saleyards were established on this site on 5 February 1886 by auctioneers Messrs. A.C. Turner and Buddle, who began hosting monthly sales of cattle, horses, and produce that same month. In November of that same year, R.C. Jordan acquired the saleyard along with the Te Puke Saleyards. Around 1906, the Judea Saleyards replaced the Topcroft Sale Yards as the primary auction site.SourcesBay of Plenty Times, 13 February 1886, Page 3: Monthly sales commenceBay of Plenty Times 19 January 1886: Turner and Buddle Saleyards to be opened 5 February 1886 (12 acres fronting Cameron Road (BOPT 30/1/1886)Judea Saleyards by Ron Faulkner: ournal of the Tauranga Historical Society Number 65Bay of Plenty Times, 9 November 1886, Page 2: R.C.
