SummaryTupaea, a paramount chief of Ngāiterangi during the early to mid-1800s, was renowned as a fighting chief for the numerous battles he led throughout his leadership. His closest ties were to his hapū, Te Whānau a Tauwhao, but his whakapapa connected him to all the major waka of Aotearoa. Tupaea built numerous pā and occupied different areas through out Tauranga moana during various chapters of his life, including Ōtumoetai, Mōtītī, Te Tumu, Kaimai and Rangiwaea to name a few.
The rangatira played a key role in, or bore witness to, incredibly significant changes in the Tauranga region's identity and landscape. Including further invasions by Ngāpuhi into the Bay of Plenty and the devastation of the musket wars, booming economic trade, The Battle of Te Tumu and wider Maketū, the Battle of Gate Pā and Te Ranga, raupatu and subsequent European settlement and the Hauhau Movement.
