"Mr. George Manly Yerex, whose death at the age of 74 occurred at Tahiti on November 27, was descended from a pioneer American family. His great-grandfather was a German prince who settled in Georgia prior to the War of Independence. His mother’s family were prominent Empire Loyalists, who migrated from the United States to Toronto, Canada, in order to remain under British rule.
In 1885, Mr. Yerex came to New Zealand, where he was prominent in business in Wellington. Three years later, he married a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Pinny, early settlers in the Motueka district. He lived for some years on the Belmont Hills, Lower Hutt, before taking up farming in the Tauranga district.
He owned the Kelston Estate and was associated in many ways with the activities of this district. In 1912, for health reasons, he moved to Tahiti, where he purchased a plantation and remained there until his death, with occasional visits to New Zealand.
The late Mr. Yerex is survived by his wife, who resides in Birkenhead, and seven children:
Mr. A. L. Yerex, of Paris
Mr. G. F. Yerex, of Wellington
Mr. L. Yerex, of Mexico
Mr. M. M. Yerex, of Birkenhead
Mrs. A. L. Park, of Wellington
Mrs. K. L. Vickerman, of Birkenhead
Mrs. A. J. Park, of Wellington
The sympathy of numerous friends in the Tauranga district will be extended to Mrs. Yerex and family in their bereavement."
