Note under cast list: The characters are imaginary, as is the place. They do however reflect the times and conditions to be found in numerous early settlements.

Prologue: Early settlers placed their lives at risk. They faced torments imposed by the harsh conditions found waiting for them. They, with the Māori, faced small comfort and little gain. Their spirit, the vision that imbued them, will not be lost where we remember. To all of them, the Pioneers, this play is dedicated in admiration of their courage and audacity.
