Harrison, Hugh, 1921-2014 (Person)
Main BodyMilitary service: Div Amm Coy 2nd NZEF WWII 1942 - 1945 North Africa - Italy.
Originally serving with the Hauraki Territorial Regiment, he joined the New Zealand Army and in 1942 was posted overseas for three years as a dispatch rider, signaler then driver. He saw active service in Palestine, Egypt, North Africa, and Italy with the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
Employment: Hugh was a carpenter's apprentice when he enlisted in 1942. When he returned from the War he built his family home on the corner of Fraser Street and Sixteenth Avenue in Tauranga.
Establishing Wade and Harrison Builders with Merv Wade, they built many of the early Ōtūmoetai subdivision houses.
He worked as a building inspector for State Advances through the 1960s in Rotorua, Tauranga and across the Western Bay.
In 1964 he established Hugh Harrison Registered Valuers, retiring in 1974.
Organisations: Tauranga RSA president, Tauranga Te Papa Rotarian.
Awards: Paul Harris Fellow (Rotary), 1988.
