Gardenhurst, c.1880-c.2022 (Place)
Also known at times as Mullanee or Chiselhurst.
Main Body1883: Death of Captain Richard Henry Farrer, who had established Gardenhurst from a soldier's grant, and ran a dairy farm supplying town milk.
1885: Gardenhurst Farm was run by partners William Villiers Tuthill and Charles F. Tuthill.
1886: Partnership of 'business carried on at Gardenhurst Farm' dissolved by mutual consent, with W.V. Tuthill withdrawing, and Charles F. Tuthill and J.P. Whelan continuing.
1889: Richard Coles Jordan rents 300 acres from W.T. Tuthill, and sublets 150 acres to local Māori to crop wheat. Over the next few years Jordan advertised stock auctions.
1892: Sold at auction (Gardenhurst, 300 acres and 8-room dwelling, lots 78 and 83 Te Papa), to John Thomas Bull (who had recently also purchased Topcroft).
1897: Sold to Mr Howard (formerly of South Africa). He planted exotic trees including camellia, chestnut, cypress, gingko, persimmon, plum and oak.
1901: Sold by Peter Munro to Charles Turner Wallis. He called for tenders to alter the house.
1908: Mrs Wallis and sons took over running the farm following the death of Charles. Later Roy and Marshall ran the farm.
post 1945: Sold to Samuel William Gilmer, who farmed with his brother Hugh, and father Hugh. Sam renamed the property Mullanee.
1967: Constructed brick house, later the base for the horticultural business of grandson David Gilmer and family.
Later: Richard (Dick) Smith took over the dairy farm from Sam Gilmer, and subdivided, creating Westridge Views, Takitimu Toll Road and Waka Kotahi highway extension land.
