SummaryJohn (Jack) Thomas Denniston, was born in Waikoukou, north of Auckland, in 1872.
A bricklayer by trade, in the late 1880s Denniston sought work at the gum fields in Hikurangi.
He then settled in Waitekauri, near Waihi, and worked in the gold mines for 10 years.

He married Maud Meehan and had two sons, Bill & Chum, and a daughter, Nell Hume.
In 1908 he settled down in Tauranga.

He built the beacon at Stony Point at the foot of Mount Maunganui.

He built the retaining walls at the Otamataha Mission Cemetery, and built the font at the Holy Trinity Church with his son Chum (George).

He worked on the old Wairoa Bridge and the Matapihi Railbridge.
