SummaryChum Denniston, was born to Jack and Maud Mary Denniston at Waitekauri, near Waihi, in 1955 where Jack worked in the gold mines for 10 years.
He arrived in Tauranga with his family on the M.V. Kaituna in 1908.
He was a leading Tauranga bricklayer, plasterer, stonemason, carrier and sportsman.
He married Moira Jean Shepherd, a nurse.
They lived at 26 Park Street for many years.
During the depression years, Mr Denniston spent many hours rowing training on the harbour.
He was involved with the Tauranga Rowing Club, St John Ambulances, Athletics administration, Harrier and Cycling Clubs.
He held a life membership of the Tauranga Rugby Sub-union, the Tauranga Rugby Referee's Association and the 50-year Service Award of the New Zealand Rugby Referee's Association.
He belong to the Manchester Unity Lodge of Oddfellow.
He held the rank of lance-corporal in the Auckland -East Coast mounted Rifles in the 1930s and then served with the 18th Battalion in an armoured unit in North Africa and Italy.
His Maternal great grandmother, 'Mammy' Fielding, was a Troop's Nurse in Tauranga in 1864 and his maternal great grandfather John Feilding joined the Waikato Militia.
His brother was William (Bill) John Denniston and his sister was Ellen Maude (Nell).
