SummaryHarry Bell Johnstone was born in York, England and after being admitted as a solicitor he emigrated to Australia and then New Zealand around 1854. He is a previous owner of 'Maungawhare', an historic house in Ōtūmoetai.
He travelled extensively throughout New Zealand as recorded in his journals: Ams 242 and settled for a time in Christhchurch. He was in partnership with W. H. Wynn Williams in Hereford street, also known as 'Shands Emporium', and later sold his interest in his solicitor's partnership and became a farmer. He purchased a property "Springbank" at Otaio in South Canterbury in 1875 that stayed in the family for many generations.
