AddBy: Pae Koroki3rd Jul 2026 4:42PMJoan Mirrielees said "the Mirrielees children sometimes went to the police station when they were short of playmates, and “quite often the prisoners would come along and play with us.” Her explanation was that the cells had no keys and “the prisoners were hardly prisoners.” When Skinner needed someone to milk his two cows, cut the lawns, or sweep the paths, he would go to the pubs at six o’clock and readily find someone willing to stay at the lock-up, because “Mrs Skinner was a wonderful cook.”
She also remembered Skinner’s horse: “a creamy horse, with a long flowing tail, and a long white mane,” which ambled around the corner near their home.
