Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, the son of Logie Pirie Grant and Barbara Allan. Arrived New Zealand 1863 with the 1st Waikato Regiment. Served in Waikato and Tauranga campaigns; later punished for desertion, but widely recognised for exceptional courage as a dispatch rider under fire. Commended by Capt Gilbert Mair and Col Roberts as among the “pluckiest men in the colonial forces.” Settled at Tauranga and Te Puke; contractor for roads, bridges, and the first Te Puke Hotel (“Grant’s Hotel”). Married Pare Piahanā (Pearson) of Ngāti Ranginui at Huria Marae (first child born 1867). Later married Caroline Moon in 1870. They divorced in 1901. Married Manu Tawhiorangi (Maringi) in 1907. Noted horseman, breeder, and community figure. Reserved in manner but respected and popular locally.
