SummaryHenry Bickers emigrated to Australia in 1855. He married Maria Proud in Collingwood in 1856.
He was recruited to fight in New Zealand as a Fencible, with enticements of free passage to New Zealand, an allotment in town and a farm section in Tauranga, which were granted in 1871.
He fought in the Battle at Pukehinahina Gate Pa, in the 1st Waikato Regiment. Afterwards, he worked as a plumber, painter and paper hanger.
His property was situated between 2nd Avenue and Cameron Road. He built the Fencible Cottage from four sections arriving on boat from Onehunga. It now stands in the grounds of the Elms Mission House.
