On reverse side of photo:
Centrally placed near the upper half of the sheet is a handwritten note in blue ink that reads:

“A view of the quarters of the officers of Imperial regiments which fought at Gate Pa. The cottages round which tents were erected were at Te Papa, close to Tauranga.”

An arrow drawn beneath the text points downward, to a clipped undated news article.
In the lower right quadrant, written in pencil and blue ink, are reproduction or layout instructions including: “Reduce to 5 × 3½”

Alongside this appears a handwritten signature or approval mark and a date written in blue ink: “Paid / 1625”

In the upper left corner, in pencil:Tauranga, 1.5.64
Below, printed in pink ink, is a commercial imprint:

Above this appears a typed or written reference:

In the upper right corner are copyright and date stamps in red and blue ink, including:

and a blue date stamp reading:

“22 APR 1964”

A further stamped mark reads:

“9 DEC 1970 – 8 O’CLOCK”
[The "8 O'Clock" was the Saturday evening edition of the Auckland Star, containing sports results].

It is difficult to place on the ground, since the lack of anything above a horizonline makes it hard to identify where the photographer was standing.

Newspaper Clipping
Affixed to the lower left portion of the verso is a clipped newspaper article. The text reports on a series of historic photographs depicting Tauranga at the time of the Battle of Gate Pā, received from England by an Auckland man whose grandfather was awarded the Victoria Cross. The article identifies the grandfather as Surgeon-General William George Nicholas Manley, V.C., C.B., and notes that the photographs had not previously been seen in New Zealand.
The clipping further explains that the image shows the officers’ quarters of the Imperial regiments who fought at Gate Pā, with tents erected among cottages at Te Papa, near Tauranga—information echoed and expanded upon in the handwritten notes above it.

A modern adhesive label from the Rogers Photo Archive is affixed at the lower right corner and reads:
