Nicholas, George Puhi (Te Kokonga), 1895-1988 (Person)
SummaryBorn in Te Puna, George, familiarly known as 'George Nick' was a descendant of Ruawahine and John Lees Faulkner. He was whangai to Charlie Faulkner. He was educated at Bethlehem school, taught by Mrs Louch and the Baker sisters.
He worked on Ōtūmoetai farms and at mills in Omanawa and Whakamarama.
He served with the Maori Pioneer Battalion in France and Belgium as in the first World War. He suffered from the 1918 Flu, and from a poisonous gas attack. He was invalided home and then to Hanmer Springs to recuperate.
After spending time in Te Puke and Kaimai he settled in the RSA's Monk Trust flats.
