Harvey, Frank Albion, 1893-1970 (Person)
SummaryFrank Albion Harvey was a builder, architectural practitioner, and local body figure associated with Ōpōtiki, Tauranga, and Mount Maunganui. He was born at Ōpōtiki in 1893, a son of David Harvey and Elizabeth Susan Rihi Harvey (née Calloway).
Educated at Taumarunui, he trained in architecture and entered the building trade. At the outbreak of War he enlisted (9 August 1914) as Private 2368, Otago Infantry Battalion and served in Samoa (1914) and at Gallipoli (1915). He was medically dischared in 1916. In 1938 he married Alice Shannon of Westland.
During the Second World War he served with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, initially as a sergeant in Home Defence and later as a Flying Officer, working on the development and maintenance of airfields at Mount Maunganui, Ōhakea, Rongotai, and related sites.
He worked as a master builder, later establishing an architectural practice in Tauranga, and served as Builder Supervisor for the Auckland and South Auckland Education Boards. From the early 1930s he lived at Mount Maunganui, where he served on the Town Board and was associated with coastal planting. He was a foundation member of the Mount Maunganui RSA and the Mount Beautifying Society, an early member of the Surf Life Saving Club, and served for many years on the board of management of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. He died on 8 April 1970, survived by his wife and two daughters.
