SummaryRebuilt by its owner John Chadwick after the 1881 fire that destroyed the block, the hotel continued to serve public and club meetings as well as commercial and private travellers.
The two-storey timber building, presented a more developed corner frontage, with a continuous street verandah, an upper balcony, and a regular series of sash windows; internally it contained drawing rooms with balcony access, numerous bedrooms, adjacent bathrooms, and a large, well-lit billiard saloon. Out back were roomy and convenient stables.
John Menzies resumed the licence after rebuilding, succeeded by his son John Menzies junior, who later transferred the licence to A. H. Fisher; following Chadwick’s death in 1891 the property was acquired by Ehrenfried Brothers, with David Asher holding the licence for an extended period.
