Smith Harvey Construction Ltd, 1942-1960 (Organisation)
SummaryFormed 1942 (Tauranga) by Tuhi Harvey and Harry Smith, following their purchase of the Pemberton Bros joinery factory (Devonport Road/First Avenue). Expanded rapidly; by 1949 it employed over 100 men. Its operations included prefabricated house construction, joinery manufacture, and retail timber supply.
From 1945 the company expanded into timber production, acquiring bush at Ōropi and Pyes Pā and operating its own mills, Tuhi Timbers, with processing yards later established in Chapel Street (c.1950) and a treatment plant added in 1953. Acquisition of cutting rights at Ōropi No. 2 (agreed 1953, confirmed 1955) was delayed by regulatory requirements and opposition from local authorities concerned about watershed protection, resulting in conditions on milling operations. Early exporter and importer of timber, including radiata pine shipments to Japan from Tauranga Wharf.
