Anglican clergyman and civic leader, born in Ventry, County Kerry, Ireland, educated Trinity College Dublin, B.A. 1866, and ordained by the Bishop of Tuam. Arrived Tauranga in 1873 as Holy Trinity’s first vicar for 39 years, later made Canon. He was a Justice of the Peace, magistrate, chaplain to the New Zealand forces, Hospital and Charitable Aid Board member and chairman, Town Board chairman, school committee chairman, borough councillor, nine-time mayor, promoter of local education examinations, and advocate for Tauranga’s borough status, Domain and civic institutions.SourcesBush, Ernest E.
