SummaryThe historic residence once owned by Canon Charles Jordan and his wife Eleanor (née Armstrong) remains standing in 2026 at 17 Eighth Avenue in Tauranga. Today’s property forms only a small portion of what was once a far more extensive estate. In 1936, part of Eleanor Jordan’s estate was subdivided and sold, creating the area now known as Jordan Field within Memorial Park.
Charles Jordan arrived in Tauranga in 1873 and became the first vicar of Holy Trinity Church. Although he died in 1912, the Eighth Avenue property stayed in family ownership until approximately 1965. Land records show his name listed as owner as early as 1879.
Earlier entries on the property’s Certificate of Title include Peter Benson and John Dixon, both originally from Australia. They were members of the 1st Waikato Militia and were each allocated land in recognition of their military service during the 1864 battles of Gate Pā and Te Ranga.
These allotments formed part of a larger tract of land initially obtained by Archdeacon Brown on behalf of the Church Missionary Society. The land had been entrusted to him by local Māori leaders to be held for the benefit of their people. However, in 1867 the Crown appropriated a significant portion of this land for military settlement purposes.
