Mary Ann Te Hei Merriman, née McLean, was born at Ōropi on 16 February 1919, the daughter of Neil McLean and Hinemoa Ada. She married Charlie Merriman in 1940 and worked on farms at Waimapū, Ōtūmoetai and Merivale. A member of the Penguin Underwater Club, she undertook spear-fishing and crayfishing expeditions around the Bay of Plenty. She later lived at 383 Fraser Street, Merivale. She contributed to the Merivale Oral History Project in 1994.
