Mary Ann Te Hei Merriman, née McLean, was born at Ōropi on 16 February 1919, the daughter of Neil McLean and Hinemoa Ada. In 1938 she moved into Tauranga and worked as a general at the Commercial Hotel. After marrying Charlie Merriman in 1940 she worked on dairy farms at Waimapū and Ōtūmoetai, undertaking milking and general farm work, and later helped on the Merriman family farm at Merivale. A member of the Penguin Underwater Club, she undertook spear-fishing and crayfishing expeditions around the Bay of Plenty. She later lived at 383 Fraser Street, Merivale, and was still working part-time in 1993. Some remember her as the “Accordion Lady” who liked to busk on Devonport Road. She contributed to the Merivale Oral History Project.
