[Information from donor]: The photo was taken on the beach at the foot of Mount Maunganui (Mauao), about where the statue of the Māori warrior now stands, Matakana Island forestry in the background. The Tauranga Penguin Underwater Spear Fishing Club was one of the earliest underwater fishing clubs in New Zealand. The members made their own masks, snorkels and spears, also built their surf skis and paddles.
