Bidois, Louis Antoine, 1820–1909 (Person)
Summary
Also known as Ruia.
Trader at Kareti, Te Puna. Born at Paimpol, Brittany, France, on 6 June 1820, son of Joseph Bidois and Marie Joseph Lefèvre. Originally a sailor, he left France in 1837 and reached the Bay of Islands in 1839. Served Bishop Pompallier’s Catholic mission at Kororāreka and was reportedly associated with the schooner
Sancta Maria
. Settled in Tauranga in 1844 and married Irihapeti Kaumoana, known as Elizabeth, of Pirirākau hapū, Ngāti Ranginui. Applied for naturalisation in 1860. Died at Kareti on 16 April 1909 and was buried at Te Puna.
