Moon, Elizabeth (nee Matherell) 1806-1901 (Person)

Her husband enrolled with the Waikato Regiment in 1863 when land wars were starting to break out. They eventually settled in Greerton, Tauranga. Elizabeth Moon, otherwise known in her later years as 'Old Mother Moon' established her home on a 5 acre property, which she lived on alone, her husband living nearby in his own house and on his own 5 acre plot of land. 

Elizabeth was granted her own acreage due to her service as a Florence Nightingale Nurse at the Crimean War. This is also the reason why she was buried in the Mission Cemetary alongside other fallen soldiers. Mrs Moon died at the age of 94 after her Greerton home caught fire during the early hours of the morning from what was thought to be caused by a lit candle. According to some, Mrs Moon was said to have refused to evacuate her home during the land wars in Tauranga and guarded her home fiercely with a pitchfork to stop anyone coming near her property.
