Lived in Auckland, Taranaki and Ōmokoroa before settling at Somerset Grove, Merivale, Tauranga, in October 1955. Married Beryl Enid Hammond in 1950. They raised four children.
Served on the Merivale School committee and contributed to local community life. He and Beryl joined the Bay of Plenty Orchid Society in 1978 and were foundation members of the Tauranga Orchid Society in 1981. They became active in native-orchid study, photography, propagation and conservation, including work associated with the Iwitahi Native Orchid Reserve. Bob’s orchid photography was published in Orchids in New Zealand.
