SummarySon of Peter Brennan and Honora Culliney. Born 8 May 1854. He married Kate Aloysius Brown (1854–1932) at Tauranga on 26 February 1876, Rev. James Mahoney officiating. Brennan was resident in Tauranga by 1879 and was appointed that year as one of five trustees responsible for the maintenance of the Tauranga public cemetery. In 1880 he operated M. J. Brennan & Co., the “Temple of Fashion” on The Strand, as a storekeeper, draper, auctioneer and insurance agent; his residence was in Hamilton Street. The firm also acted for several insurance companies. Left Tauranga and subsequently lived at Waverley, Pātea, Wanganui and Manaia before settling at Ōpunake. At Ōpunake he worked as an accountant and journalist, later transferring his printing, publishing and accountancy business to his son Arthur Joseph Brennan.
