Thomas Lochhead was born to Scottish parents in 1861. Following a period of farming in Dunsandel (1883-1892) and Palmerston North (1893), he moved to Te Puna where he continued to farm at his Katikati property. He took an active part in community life, serving as: president of the Tauranga branch of the Farmers' Union; chairman of the Tauranga Co-operative Dairy Factory; chairman of the Tauranga Electric Power Board; member of Tauranga County Council; chairman of the Te Puna School Committee; member of the Tauranga Harbour Board; a Justice of the Peace. He and Elizabeth Lochhead née Low (1860?-1928), his wife, had five sons and four daughters together. Two of their sons were killed on active service during the First World War.
