Outward letter book of the Tauranga Survey Office, 1866-1868

Date14 May 1866-30 Oct 1868Reference NumberMs 18DescriptionThis book contains copies of letters sent to and from the District Surveyors Office in Tauranga between 1866 and 1868. The first District Surveyor was Frederick Utting. The second was Horatio Warner who was a Royal Engineer and had been a Senior Sergeant in the Auckland Rifles Volunteers during the Taranaki Wars. The third was Henry L. Skeet. Skeet, at the time the letter book was created, had just formed the Auckland Volunteer Engineers Corp and been voted in as Captain and Commanding Officer. Names within Skeet’s Paramilitary group included Edward Tregear, Henry Graham, Thomas E. Jordan, Henry Rowe, G.T. Wilkinson and William Gundry. These men also worked as surveyors and, as a consequence, are mentioned throughout the letter book. Gundry, who had both Pākehā and Māori tupuna, had been at Rangiriri and Orakau, and would later make Captain, eventually becoming part of the Armed Constabulary, a precursor to the New Zealand Police Service.
