On 26 April 1969, the Māori queen; Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu opened the new Hangarau wharenui at Peterehema marae in Bethlehem, Tauranga alongside many kaumātua and kuia from around Aotearoa. The original wharenui was pulled down in 1964. Some of the original carvings have been included into the new wharenui however most of the pou were carved by Ray Lucas, Ron Mana, Jimmy Tapiata, Charlie Tutaki, and others under the direction of Tuti Tukaokao. Many of the patterns from the original wharenui were implemented into the new tukutuku panels made by Te Ngohe Te Wheoro, Maraea Pohe, and other women under the tuition of Pineāmine (Pine) Taiapa (Ngāti Porou).
