Ms 88/1: Log for the gunboat "Caroline", dated 7 June 1861-13 June 1862.

Ms 88/2: Journal of the Caroline, dated between between 1862 and c. 1863, and the "Sandfly", dated between c.1863 and 1865.
This volume was later used as a scrapbook and has newspapers clippings covering most pages.

The Caroline was originally called the "Ruby" and was a schooner of 25 tons. She was built in 1860 at Omaha, North Auckland, by Jas S. Meiklejohn. The government purchased her to be fitted as a gun-boat to protect the Manukau waters. She was used in this capacity from 1860 to 1863, when she reverted to the name "Ruby". She was wrecked on Walker Rock, Jackson's Head, Cook Strait, on 23 April 1879.

The Sandfly started her life as the "Tasmanian Maid" before being bought by the government and converted into a gunboat, at which point she was renamed the Sandfly. It was while serving as commander of the Sandfly that Hannibal Marks was suspended for disobeying orders. A matter that was reported in the Daily Southern Cross on 13 September 1865.

Marks went on to become the harbourmaster and pilot at Tauranga from 1874-1879.
