Datec. 1923-c.1929Reference NumberAms 261/1DescriptionFront: Part 1 - Reference to the extent to which the two Ngaiterangi women, who were brought to him to sketch, were "much more decorated than usual". Also confirming he drew a tattoo of Hori Ngatai at the 25 July 1864 surrender.

Front: Part 2 - Reference to an article published in the "Dominion" recalling a series of events whereby Robley hastily made sketches in the trenches the morning after the Battle of Gate Pā, and managed to get them published in The Illustrated London News by 23rd June 1964 (64 days). This was no mean feat when journeys of this time usually took between 75 to 120 days.

Back: Part 1 - Mention made of a "huia box" from Opotiki area which had belonged to Rev. Volkner's family but later secured by Oldman, a collector of Maori artefacts. W O Oldman was a London dealer whose Maori and Pacific Collection was repatriated to New Zealand from Britain in 1948 when it was purchased by the New Zealand Government.
