Leonard Garfield Goodacre (1893-1977)
Main BodyNew Plymouth born Leonard Garfield Goodacre worked as a Clerk for Hal Garfield (father). He signed up in August 1915 and served in a medical capacity in Europe with the New Zealand Medical Corp.

Leonard Goodacre signed up on the 24th August, 1915
August 28 1915 (Trentham Camp) he (Private) was admitted to Hospital with sore eyes
September 3rd (Trentham Camp) he (Private) was admitted to Hospital with flu
Letters and events from 1916
Postcard while on leave from Trentham Camp (late 1915 / early 1916)
June 9, 1916 he was promoted to Corporal
July 3 1916 he was admitted to hospital in Upper Hutt with Chicken Pox, at which time he was ranked L/Corporal
Letter: September 15 1916, writes to parents from somewhere "at sea"
Letters and events from 1917
January 20, 1917 he was promoted to Lance Corporal
Admitted ships hospital May 3, discharged following day
Postcard: May 7 1917 wrote postcard home. In South Africa on route to England
Disembarked June 10. Marched in and taken on strength same day
Letter: June 11 1917 wrote postcard home. Just arrived in Sling Camp
June 12 1917,
at own request he was reverted to ranks, returning to Private
Admitted Codford Hospital June 19, discharged August 23
Letter: August 29 1917, letter written to Mother from Codford Camp. Describes seeing a car vs pram hit and rub
Letter: September 10 1917, letter from Codford home reflecting on birthday, expects to be off to Sling soon
September 11 1917 transferred to NZ Infantry Regiment Group (Sling camp outside of Bulford) as L/Corp
September 22 1917 marched out to France as a private again
October 25 1917 joined 4th N.Z. Field Ambulance (ex base), retained for duty aboard "Marama" and put in charge of ships personnel
Letter: November 2 1917, writes to sister from billeted French residence. Pleased to be posted to NZ 4th Field Ambulance as sick of hospital work
Letter: November 16 1917, Write to sister after receiving months of mail. Describes stretcher bearing under shell fire
Letter: November 29 1917, writes to sister from Codford Camp
Letters and events from 1918
February 8, 1918, attached to 22nd Corp, Reinforcement Camp
February 24, 1918, No. 1 N.Z. Field Ambulance
Letter: March 5, 1918, from France, has learned of his father's death
July 24, 1918, detached to England on duty
August 7, 1918,
struck of strength of New Zealand Military Corp Reserve
August 8, 1918, Marseilles, embarks on 'Marama' for duty
Letter: August 25 1918 (probably) Writes home to Mother
October 4 posted to NZMC Awapuni
October 30 & 31 transferred to and posted to Rotorua
September 20, returned on the Marama
December 13, transferred to Awapuni. Leonard also volunteered during the Second World War, serving in the Home Guard mostly in Tauranga where he worked for the Department of Labour as an inspector of factories (Military Record page 9)
