Date1966DescriptionPhotographs taken by local photographers began appearing in the Bay of Plenty Times from about 1960/61. These negatives were kept by the paper, including negatives that were never published. In 1976 the paper suffered a major fire, resulting in water damage to a lot of the archives. In the late 1980s the paper's owners, the Gifford and Cross families, donated the negatives to the Tauranga City Libraries. There are about 160,000 frames, mostly 120-format popular in the early 1960s, and 35mm film which gradually replaced these from the late 1960s onward. There are a small number of large format negatives as well. Over time you'll see this Gifford-Cross online collection grow. Keep coming back!
In 2019 the library Heritage and Research team began re-housing and digitising this valuable collection. Sadly many of the negatives from 1966 began to disintegrate, making it difficult to separate the negative from the original glassine envelopes. This appears as a pale undulating cast over the photograph surface.
