Appointed Commander of the 1st Waikato Regiment on 22 April 1864. Arrived Tauranga aboard Steamer Alexandra in June 1864 with 280 reinforcements. Involved in support operations at Te Ranga (21 June 1864). Declined to act on reports of Hauhau at Whakamarama in May 1864 without clear evidence.
Allocated large section of land in the Waimapu centre block, though at the time much of it was considered unsuitable to farming.
Died 21 November 1896 at Vale End, Beaumont, St Peter, Jersey, Channel Islands. Buried 25 November 1896.
