Margaret, the daughter of Rata Lever and Alan Roden, was born in South Africa in 1942. She attended Diocesan School for Girls in the 1950s. She became a qualified Customs Agent in 1974, an Associate Chartered Accountant in 1988, and gained a Masters in Business Administration in 1994. Before 1969, she married Peter Patrick Jonathan R. Suthrell, and they lived in Tauranga. After the marriage ended, in the late 1970s or early 1980s, Margaret moved to Auckland.
