Goulding, Robert (Bert) Thomson, 1886-1987 (Person)
He served in the 6th Hauraki Regiment, 8th Survey Company, and Royal Engineers during the First World War (Gallipoli and Salonika).
He married Margaret Wallis in 1947.

Career: Started in Napier with Kennedy Bros and Morgan. In 1909 he was based in Tauranga as a surveyor doing triangulation work for the Lands and Survey Department. Posted overseas during the War, 1914-1919, he continued survey work. After the war was based in Ōtorohanga, surveying blocks for Alf Cheale in the King Country. Then measuring base lines at the Kaingaroa Plains, based at a camp past the prison.. Next was surveying and renewing old triangulations at Matamata, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki.
Around 1920 he joined with Frank Stevens, and they became 'Stevens and Goulding, Surveyors', with an office on the corner of Willow and Wharf Streets in Tauranga, opposite the Bank of Australasia. Often camping out when 'chopping up blocks', they used a horse and trap for short jobs.
From c. 1934 he worked as a consultant Town Planner for Tauranga Council, marking out a road from Judea to Waikareao Estuary.
He retired in 1964.
Early days in Tauranga: he boarded with Mrs Humphreys and her children at 'Westcliff' 107 Wharf Street, purchasing the house when she died c. 1952 and extending it.
